Little League National Coach Visits Lethbridge
Little League Canada has introduced a new Education program and named a National Coach who will be responsible for implementing it. Well-known international baseball instructor Al Herback of Calgary has been conducting clinics in Canada, the United States, and in many other countries around the world, for 36 years. He's been contracted by Little League Canada to oversee and guide the program as National Coach and roving instructor. It's entitled Teaching for Tomorrow and includes DVDs and two manuals that were written by Herback. He's currently touring the country to launch the program and will be holding two coaching clinics in Lethbridge April 12 and 19.
The program combines two of Al's great joys in life...teaching and baseball. He grew up in Regina, played his minor baseball there, and later was a member of the Regina Red Sox in the Saskatchewan Baseball League (the forerunner of the Westerm Major Baseball League). After moving to Calgary in 1970 Herback spent the next 27 years as a teacher at the elementary and junior high levels. He left the teaching profession in 1996, and since then has dedicated his life to promoting and enhancing the game for young players and their coaches.
Teaching For Tomorrow is designed to include not only baseball skills and drills, but also to incorporate life skills into practices and games. Skills such as hard work, commitment, self-discipline, good sportsmanship, and team loyalty will be some of the life skills emphasized. The intention of the clinics will be to bring the manual to life.
Al considers the creation and writing of this new program to be his greatest honor to date. Little League Canada officials believe it will be one of the most unique and innovative educational programs available to coaches. It should not only serve as the foundation for teaching the fundamentals of baseball and softball, but is intended to enhance the work being done in schools and other organizations to make our children better citizens.
